"This course is particularly relevant in today´s environment. The labor movement in California continues to face enormous obstacles," said Bruce Lebedoff Anders, WLAC Faculty Member. Anders was referring to the Governors recent actions taken in the midst of a stalemate with the legislature over the State budget, firing 10,000 part-time and temporary state workers and unilaterally reducing the pay of others to the Federal minimum wage. Additionally, he added, is the challenge faced by the inclusion and/or exclusion of undocumented workers.
The Dolores Huerta Labor Institute which aided in the development of the course is named after United Farm Workers Co-Founder Dolores Huerta. Huerta revolutionized the labor movement in the 1960´s using tactics of non-violence and ultimately dedicating her life to the struggle for justice, dignity and a decent standard of living for one of our countries most exploited groups, farm workers. Today she serves as President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation
